Outdoor Rooms A combination of new materials with architectural salvage and garage-sale finds creates this truly one-of-a-kind and low-cost patio. By having a tree-covered area right outside the walk out basement, it serves as the patio site. The homeowner built a retaining wall and used crushed-limestone fill to level the steeply sloped space. Fire pits The homeowner created a cozy space out on his porch.  By fabricating a fireplace outside, he was able to have a cozy fire in the fall and winter months.  In the spring and summer, by placing multiple candles in a tier pattern, it resulted in the same ambiance, while keeping the heat at bay. Big on style, low on budget This outdoor room looks expensive, but that's just what the homeowner wants you to think. Inexpensive reclaimed barn table,  lots of foliage, stream of lights, and an assortment of chairs from a local flea market, makes this space look funky and fun.  Fancy footwork Concrete steppers laid in gravel create a cute pathway that connects the outdoor room to the back of the house. By covering the yard with gravel, the homeowner has very little yard maintenance to deal with, giving him more time to enjoy the fruits of his labor. ...

Happy New Year!!! As we put away our Christmas decorations, and place our house back in order…the questions I pose to you are: Are you arranging your furniture optimally? When was the last time you updated your layout, colors, and design? Do you need a refresh? Have you ever been in a beautiful home, but felt awkward? Well, if furniture isn’t arranged optimally, even the most beautiful of rooms can fall short and feel awkward. So how do you create a successful layout? For starters, try avoiding these common mistakes…. Wall flower furniture Your room may feel bigger with all the furniture pushed up against the wall, but if you find yourself having to shout across the room to have a conversation, it may be time to rearrange.  In this living room, the sofa “floats” in the middle of the room, and by being closer to the fireplace and the chairs, it creates a cozier conversation area and provides better functionality.         Beds that partially block a window- A bed that peeks over a window frame, looks odd from the street and can lead to an uneven fading. However, what if it’s the only place for your bed?  Make it look better with these tricks:  Hang floor length curtain panels that fall behind the headboard and block the back of the headboard from the window  Or install top-down, bottom–up shades , which will allow light to come in, but will also act as a backdrop for the protruding headboard edges,  If your style is modern, go with a platform bed with  a headboard that...

Quick Bathroom Refreshes Take your bathroom from blah to beautiful in just a few days. These bathrooms show you how to “make over” your bathroom in a weekend without a GC. Blank Canvas to Beautiful Monochromatic surfaces made this 9x5-foot bath boring and the laminate floor planks weren't suitable for the wet environment. Porcelain tile, painted stripes and polished accessories will create eye-pleasing contrast. New porcelain tiles on the floor look great and provide a water-resistant surface that’s smarter for stepping out of the shower. Painted stripes in cream and taupe create the look of wallpaper without the concern of future peeling in this moist environment. By alternating cream and taupe colors from a similar hue, it results in added interest without overwhelming the space. Wider stripes help transform a small space to feeling larger. Simple black-framed, graphic artwork pops against the subtle wall tones.       Have a very narrow bathroom? A ready-made vanity would have been too deep to fit in this 3x8-foot bath, and a custom-made cabinet wasn't in the budget. The solution? Retro fit a petite table to serve as the vanity. You can locate amazing finds at your local Habitat for Humanity Stores, local furniture stores or specialty décor shops in your area. This weathered patina and X-shape designs on the sides and back made the table look like a European antique, but the $150 price tag made it affordable. Adding a vessel sink and wall-mount faucet, and pairing the vanity with an oval mirror, painted with an aged pewter and antique gold finish, creates a polished look...

Exterior Lighting Now that spring is officially here and summer is around the corner, one fabulous way to make your home more inviting is to invest some time and money into installing exterior lighting. Not only does this provide the added security your home deserves, but it also makes your yard look as beautiful at night, as it does during the day.   Solar The easiest of all lights to use is decorative, solar-powered landscape lights because they require no wiring. Simply place them in a sunny spot, and when dusk arrives, they come on automatically to light the way for guests, or to accent a garden area. Guide the Way Lead guests to the front door with a path of lights set along the walkway. For the most pleasing look, choose soft, non-glaring fixtures that direct most of the light downward. Low Voltage, High Impact A string of low-voltage lighting is the perfect solution for brightening a shady bend along a walkway. It’s a low-cost, easy, do-it-yourself solution for illuminating a path and highlighting plantings. Add drama to your front yard by spotlighting a front yard focal point. Up-lighting provided by spotlights accentuates the texture of tree trunks and creates a pleasing glow on foliage. Outline a Bed Inexpensive rope lighting creates a great uplighting effect when placed on the back of landscape bed edging. Roll out the tube lighting and pin it in place with landscape staples for a hidden glow. Whether or not you need help designing inside or out, we at Usable Space Interiors can help you.  Hope these...

I thoroughly enjoy taking in all the creative ideas from each family’s interior designer. :) Below are some ideas I want to pass along, as you prepare to decorate this fall… Fall Inside Pretty "Leaf Pressings" can be that little touch, that makes your indoor Fall Decor polish a room.  Personally, I like to focus on a small isolated area, which can set the mood for an entire space.  A great example of this could be your hearth room.  Making the buffet, a corner piece, or the center of your table as a focal point, with some lovely pressed leaves, or an Acorn Frame (hot glue gun works best), along side with (Jack-o-lanterns for Halloween, or a decorative Turkey for Thanksgiving), is something you can use for the entire fall season.  You can add a berry-covered branch or a branch with multi-colored leaves for a simple, yet elegant mantel display. Everyone loves a little Bling! A simple display of mini pumpkins or gourds can add to a very stylish centerpiece just by adding some...
